about

waxpaperbeercup is a chicago cubs blog that was started by me, cub fan corncobdress (ccd). The opinions on this blog are mine. You may like some, you won’t others.

Who We Are: “waxpaperbeercup is a Chicago Cubs blog written by a Cubs fan that has followed the club for more than 30 seasons. Our favorite subjects include the business that surrounds the team, Cubs history, bad Cubs players from the 80′s, and of course beer. (It makes the disappointment fade.)”

UPDATE 4/17/10 — waxpaperbeercup was actually on twitter before it was a blog. So it’s always nice to get noticed. Glenn McBride at Chicago Examiner was kind enough to review the waxpaperbeercup twitter feed. Here is the link. Here are a few of the highlights:

Is it relevant?
While the WaxPaperBeerCup.com blog is not official affiliated with the Cubs, they do provide both essential information and a flare for capturing the feelings of a fan. According to the Twitter ranking system WeFollow.com@wpbc is the most influential Chicago Cubs Twitter account.

Review:
The updates from @wpbc may be many and at times they can be lacking in purpose, this does not take away anything from the appeal of the feed. What makes this account successful is the combination of die hard love of the Cubs and the desire to connect with other North Siders. No ground will be broken by @wpbc, but it will be a fun follow.

Final Word: A borderline Chicago Twitter Essential. If you are a Cubs fan, FOLLOW @wpbc

LOL. That’s a very true review. So if you expect these tweets to break ground or have a purpose you are probably following the wrong twitterer.

The picture on the wpbc twitter background is the 1908 World Championship team.

So that is who this page is.

Thanks for stopping by,

I am a lifelong, often frustrated, Chicago Cubs fan, in my late 30′s.

The Cubs have been part of my summers as long as I can remember. My first Cubs game was July 2, 1978 when the Cubs lost to the Phillies at Wrigley Fd. 6-5 (despite an ONIR). I was 6 years old. I have regularly followed Cub teams since 1979 (give or take a few summers spent in Madison, WI back in the early 90′s). My favorite Cub team in my lifetime was the 1989 club that won the old NL East.

I spent the second half of the 90′s with gm, vehere and a brit fully krausened in the right field bleachers rooting on bad Cubs clubs and a miracle wild card team in 1998. Following the Cubs collapse down the stretch in 2004 I started the crappy/unpopular cubs blog 1060west. I ended that blog in early 2008.

During my time away from blogging the Cubs I missed it. But most of the regulars from 1060 had moved onto bigger and better things. So I decided to try and take my Cubs thoughts solo. Introducing waxpaperbeercup, named in honor of the wax cups we drank Old Style out of for years out at Clark and Addison. It’ll probably at times sound like 1060light, but most importantly I have a place to write what I think about the goings on with the Northsiders.

Currently, I live on the northwest side of Chicago with my family.

The reason I decided to start contributing to WPBC is the same reason CCD, I’m a 20 year old life long Cubs fan. I currently live in Mesa, AZ but I spent most of my childhood bouncing back and forth between Mesa and the Chicago Suburbs. I was born into Cub fandom. I was even taken home from the hospital in a Cubs baby blanket. My undying love for the Cubs comes from my dad. He took me to my first Cubs game at 5 years old. It was a spring training game and ever since then I have been hooked.

As a fan I didn’t really feel the pure sadness that often comes with being a cubs fan until the 2003 season. I do remember the 1998 wild card year but, it wasn’t that big of a let down because of how they got the wild card. I will admit it I cried at the end of game 7 of the ’03 NLDS and I know I wasn’t the only one. Then the next wave was the 2007 season when they got swept by an inferior Arizona D’backs team. It was horrible having to live it down to all these fair weather Arizona fans. Then I know you all know ’08, no need to talk about it. But year after year I find myself getting all gitty like a school girl when spring training comes around.

Which leads me to one of the main topics of my contributions to WPBC, Spring training. I will be reporting on all things spring training. Everything from how certain players are looking to how some of the new guys are treating the fans to anything else I feel deserves to be posted on the great WPBC. I would love for people to comment on my postings. Just like us Cubs fans say ever year, THIS IS NEXT YEAR!
