Cubs clinchers: 2003
Elias Sports Bureau claims that double headers are swept on 26.2% of the time. That’s no surprise to many of you who watch the Cubs.
On September 27, 2003 the Cubs beat those odds and clinched by taking a double header from the Pittsburgh Pirates. They also got help in Houston where the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Astros 5-2. The Cubs had started the day with a magic number of 3, by the end of the day it was 0.
Mark Prior got things going in the first game en route to his 18th win of the season. Here’s game 1:

It’s fun for me to look back b. Each one of these teams brings a smile to my face.
I was in attendance for this doubleheader and it was just awesome. (true story, a pair of my friends actually went to the first game and had to leave to go to a family party at his girlfriends Grandma’s house…man did I give them shit when they left between games 1 and 2). I was just hoping they could somehow get the magic number to one so they could clinch on Sunday (the final day of the season and coincidentally that year they retired Santo’s #10.) The fact that all three things happened, still shocks me.
I went on the world tour that night. What a day and what a night.

The Cubs clinched while I was driving through a Somalian neighborhood in Minneapolis. Honked my horn around a bunch of burkad ladies. It was an out of body experience.
